Ornella Volta was born on January 1, 1927, in Trieste, Italy. She is a daughter of Tito Vasio, an ampule manufacturer, and Renata (Denon) Vasio, a homemaker.
During the period from 1945 till 1949, Ornella attended Polytechnic University of Milan. In 1952, she also studied at the Experimental Cinematography Center in Rome.
At the beginning of her career, Ornella Volta worked as an assistant to film directors, including Luigi Comencini in 1955, Alex Joffé between 1957 and 1959, and Federico Fellini in 1970.
In 1978, Ornella held a post of a director of exhibitions and catalogs on Erik Satie. In 1981, she became an artistic director and founder of Archives de la Fondation Erik Satie. Two years later, in 1983, Ornella curated the Musée-Placard d'Erik Satie.
Throughout the 1980's, she worked at different venues, such as museums and theatres, including the Festival dei Due Mondi (Festival of the Two Worlds) in Spoleto (1981), Chaillot National Theater in Paris (1984), Dansmuseet (the Dance Museum) in Stockholm (1985), Musée national des Arts et Traditions Populaires in Paris (1988) and Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (1989). In 1990, Ornella acted as a director of an exhibition on "The Group of Six" in Neuilly-sur-Seine.
During her career, besides several books, Ornella also authored exhibition catalogs for "Satie op Papier", Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, 1976; "Erik Satie a Montmartre", Le Musée de Montmartre, Paris, 1982; "Alfred Jarry e la Patafisica", Palazzo Reale, Milan, 1985; "Jean Cocteau", Staatliche Kunsthalle, Baden-Baden, 1989; "España y los Ballets Russes", Auditorio Manuel de Falla, Granada, 1989, and others.
In her later years, she curated the Parisian museum, dedicated to a French composer Erik Satie.
