Ota became a priest and called himself Sanraku. By 1532, the Hojos had become powerful in the Kanto district and the Uesugis declined. Sukemasa sent his master, Norimasa Uesugi, to Norinobu Uesugi in Echigo Province (Niigata Prefecture) for protection. He was defeated by Ujiyasu Hojo at Konodai near Edo. After this battle, all warlords in northeastern Japan went to the Hojos' side, except Sukemasa who continued to serve Kenshin Uesugi.
