Otaka went to Kyoto and studied under Umpin Umeda, a Loyalist scholar. He also studied military science, was well versed in gunnery and good at making leather armor.
Otaka was on the blacklist of the Shogunate for his pro-Imperialist activities in Kyoto. When he, feizo Miyabe and other loyalists were conferring on a plan of overthrowing the Shogunate at the-Ikedaya Inn, in Sanjo, Kyoto (1864), they were attacked by the Shinsen-gumi, a band of Shogunate swordsmen, and Qtaka was killed.
