Otani Kosho was born on April 22, 1817. Otani was the third son of Tatsu-nyo (Koro).

In 1868, Otani and his son, Koei, contributed funds and food to the Imperial forces fighting the Shogunate at the Meiji Restoration. They also contributed to the development of Hokkaido.
He was Chief Abbot for 44 years, during which he reformed temple administration, established the education system and promoted overseas missionary work.
