Hsu Pao-chien attended the Customs College, Peking, from 1910 and 1915, Union Theological Seminary in 1920-1923 and Teachers' College between 1921 and 1922. He studied philosophy at Columbia University from 1922 to 1924.
Mr. Hsu was a student secretary of the Peking Y.M.C.A. from 1915 to 1920. He served as an executive secretary, Peking Y.M.C.A. Student Work Union in 1924-1926. Hsu Pao-chien held the post of a lecturer in philosophy, Yenching University, Peking, 1924-1926. He was an associate professor of philosophy, Yenching University, in 1926-1927. Mr. Hsu became a professor of philosophy and head of the department, Yenching University, in 1927. Since 1929 he worked as a China correspondent of the International Fellowship of Reconciliation.
