Quotations:
"Books have often been my best friends, loyal and true when everything else in my life was chaotic. After reading and appreciating so many of them, it seemed only natural to write them. I have written in many styles— academic, professional, and trade articles; advertising and public relations copy; biography and fiction. To date, most of my biographical and fictional writings were as a ghostwriter. The titles of these works must remain mysterious, but ghosting has allowed me to span everything from world history, war, and politics to anthropology, psychology, and adolescence—and to keep eating while doing so. It’s been a glorious good time."
“The need for income led me to deal with the practical side of books (editing, working as a literary agent, ghostwriting, publishing, copywriting) while struggling to write meaningful prose. The practical side also taught me the importance of clarity and brevity. I passed this knowledge along in my teaching, and my contact with struggling student writers has taught me how to explain the art of writing. How to Write, Publish, and Market Your Book has grown out of everything I’ve learned over a lifetime of loving words, crafting them, and seeing them in print.”
