In the author's engaging tale of a flawed public order, the elite circles and the demi-monde of depression-era Paris come vividly to life. Paul Jankowski skillfully recounts Stavisky's notorious schemes and untimely demise, the deadly riot that rocked Paris in its wake, the fall of successive governments including that of Edouard Daladier, and the spectacular trial of many of the swindler's accomplices.

(At the end of the twentieth century, France found itself ...)
At the end of the twentieth century, France found itself in the midst of another scandalous fin de siècle, awash with rumors and revelations of wrongdoing in high places. As the millennium expired, the Republic's servants, some sitting, others retired, received much condemnation, whether welcomed or resented. When taken together, surely les affaires now approximate in political significance (if not in noise or invective) those of the Dreyfus or Panama scandals a century ago? Yet the author argues this is not so.

In Verdun, historian Paul Jankowski provides the definitive account of the iconic battle of World War I. He combines the best of traditional military history-its emphasis on leaders, plans, technology, and the contingency of combat-with the newer social and cultural approach, stressing the soldier's experience, the institutional structures of the military, and the impact of war on national memory.

A narrative history, cinematic in scope, of a process that was taking shape in the winter of 1933 as domestic passions around the world colluded to drive governments towards a war few of them wanted and none of them could control. All Against All is the story of the season our world changed from postwar to prewar again. It is a book about the power of bad ideas - exploring why, during a single winter, between November 1932 and April 1933, so much went so wrong.

Paul F. Jankowski was born on July 8, 1950, in New York, United States. He is a son of Paul Jankowski, a United Nations official, and Louise Jankowski, maiden name Welsh.
Paul Jankowski attended international schools before taking undergraduate and graduate degrees at Balliol College, Oxford. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1970, a Master of Arts, and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1987 from Balliol College.
In 1971-1972, Paul Jankowski worked as a research assistant at Time magazine. In 1973-1982, he was a public and international affairs consultant at DuPont Company, Wilmington. In 1987-1988, Jankowski was a visiting assistant professor at Brandeis University, Waltham, then he became a lecturer, associate professor, and in 1990 - an assistant professor. In 1988-1990, he was a visiting assistant professor at Stanford University, Palo Alto. Now, Paul Jankowski is a Raymond Ginger Professor of History at Brandeis University and the former chair of the history department. His expertise is Modern European and French history as well as war and conflict in European history. He has lectured on important world affairs such as the Paris riots and written about events like the Stavisky Affair.
As part of a series of events commemorating the 100th anniversary of the battle of Verdun, Paul Jankowski wrote a feature article for Le Monde which was included in a special section devoted to this storied battle. Entitled "The myths of Verdun," the article traces the ways that French and German legends about the battle depart from historical realities. They pervaded subsequent decades and shaped popular thinking about the why? and the how? of the battle, about its origins and the way it was fought. Rejecting the notion that such legends were deliberate fabrications, the article insists instead that they show how contemporaries and their descendants made sense of an otherwise incomprehensible event and invites historians to respect the myths as well as restore the facts.
In Communism and Collaboration: Simon Sabiani and Politics in Marseille, 1919-1944, Jankowski explores the career of Simon Sabiani, who, beginning as a Corsican neighborhood boss in Marseille after World War I, went on to forge a populist career and cult of personality not unlike the Louisiana dynasty of Huey Long. Jankowski's Stavisky: A Confidence Man in the Republic of Virtue was originally published in French as Cette vilaine affaire Stavitsy: histoire d'un scandale politique. Stavisky' examines the financial scandal that virtually brought down the Third Republic. Not even the Panama Canal Affair, although involving much more money, escalated into a scandal of such magnitude.
