From 1932 to 1938 he studied at secondary school in Min’kov, Volgograd oblast, USSR.
In 1942 he graduated from secondary school №1 in Kamensk-Uralsky.
In 1945 he graduated from Higher Naval School named after I.V.Stalin (later Yeysk Higher Military Aviation School for Pilots), he has been given the rank of military aviator.
In 1959 he graduated from Gagarin Air Force Academy in Monino, Faculty of Command.
After school Belyaev worked as a lathe operator at the plant №105 in Kamensk-Uralsky. After graduating from Higher Naval School he was a pilot at one in the unit of Pacific fleet.
In 1953 he assumed the position of squadron deputy commander, in 1959 - squadron commander.
In 1960 he got the position of cosmonaut-listener at Cosmonaut Training Center. Since January 1963 he was a member of Cosmonaut Corps.
