(The lands Sammallahti depicts are austere, foreign, cold,...)
The lands Sammallahti depicts are austere, foreign, cold, and yet strangely inviting. Born and based in Finland, he has traveled across the northern reaches of Europe and Russia, across the peopled expanses of India and the empty deserts of Mongolia. The work in this diminutive, self-published monograph ranges from the late 1960s until the early 1980s, a fruitful period during which his image-making matured. He sums up his thoughts on this work with a few short words. "I understood that you get a photograph, you don't take it."

Pentti Ilmari Sammallahti was born on February 18, 1950, in Helsinki, Southern Finland, Finland.
Pentti Sammallahti has taught photography at the University of Industrial Arts in Helsinki since 1974, and from 1974 to 1976 taught photography at the Lahti Art School in Finland.
Sammallahti’s travels across Europe, Scandinavia, Siberia, the far East, and Africa, combined with his interest in fine printing and lithography, led him to publish numerous portfolios such as Ici et Loin (Actes Sud, 2012). Sammallahti’s work has a supernatural sense of a moment suspended in time, with the sensitivity and beauty of the world displayed through its animalistic existence. As a wanderer and master craftsman, Pentti Sammallahti records the relationships he discovers between people and animals in the far-off places he visits.
