Engaged in military duty on frontier in Texas, Indiana Ty., Kansas, Arizona and New Mexico, 1870-1888, and active in movements against and engagements with Indians.
Honorary mentioned in general orders, June 25, 1888, “for meritorious conduct in defeating attempt made by Navajo Indians to rescue from custody Indian prisoners, between Fts. Wingate and Gallup, New Mexico”.
Engaged in campaign against Sioux Indians, under General Miles, 1890-1897. Awarded medal of honor “for distinguished bravery while commanding his troop against Sioux on White River, South Dakot, January 1, 1891”.
Commanded 2d squadron, 6th Cavalry, in Spanish-American War, and in campaign against Santiago de Cuba, and wounded in assault on San Juan Ridge, July 1, 1898.
Military attache to Germany, 1900-1902. Assistant adjutant general, July 15, 1902. Chief of staff, Philippines Division, 1903-1904, Atlantic Division, 1904-1906.
Won many medals for marksmanship.
