He was a priest in Drammen and in Sør-Fron, and from 1934 rector at the Norwegian School of Theology. He played an active role in the Church"s resistance during the German occupation of Norway. Foreign this he was imprisoned in Berg concentration camp from 11 November 1944 to May 1945.
He was appointed bishop of the Diocese of Agder from 1946 to 1951, and a bishop of the Diocese of Oslo from 1951 to 1968.
