He worked as a draftsman for the late J. R. Hamilton, set up his own office in 1856. Throughout the years that followed Mr McLaughlin continued active in practice and received a number of important architectural commissions. Among the better known buildings in Cincinnati he designed were the first Art Museum in Eden Park, erected in 1870 with wings of the structure a later addition; City Opera House, dating from’ 1870 later the Public Library; first building of the Hamilton County Court House superseded in 1919 by the present structure (Rankin, Kellogg & Crane, architects); Masonic Hall, and the Zoological Society Building. He also planned several department stores and private homes in Cincinnati and environs, together with a number of public buildings in other cities. In 1912 he closed his office to move to New York where he spent his remaining years.
Elected president of the Cincinnati Chapter in 1878, he served in that office four years, and again in the period between 1889 and 1893. Mr. McLaughlin was a so active in Institute affairs, advanced to Fellowship in 1870, and for several years was a member of the national Board of Directors.
