Nancy Ann Kerrigan was born on October 13, 1969 in Woburn, Massachusetts, United States. She is a daughter of Daniel Kerrigan and Brenda Kerrigan. She has two elder brothers, Michael and Mark.
Nancy Kerrigan was raised in Stoneham, Massachusetts in a modest family. Looking at her two elder brothers who played hockey, little Nancy got involved in figure skating at the age of six. She first took group lessons at a nearby ice rink. The instructors quickly noted her abilities and advised her parents to enroll the girl in private lessons.
To afford it and realize Nancy's dream of an athletic career, her father, a welder at a local food plant, took on an extra job as a maintenance man in the evening. He was also obliged to manage many of the household and family affairs as his wife, Nancy's mother, was almost completely blind because of the rare illness. Eventually, he would take out substantial loans. Fortunately, Kerrigan was largely supported by an extended family that lived around. The relatives helped with lessons and transportation.
Kerrigan started to attend private lessons at the age of eight. She usually woke up at four o'clock in the morning, roused out of bed by her mother who would always eat breakfast with her. Her father drove her to her five o'clock early morning lessons. The first competition triumph occurred in 1978, at the Boston Open.
The busy training schedule withdrew Nancy from many social activities typical for youth, so she had some problems with developing close friendships. The first victories, however, came quickly due to her determination and commitment. At fourteen, Kerrigan landed her first triple-triple (two consecutive triple toe loops) in practice and successfully completed the jump for the first time in competition the following year. At the time, no female skaters mastered that difficult combination before.
Kerrigan placed second at the 1985 Eastern Junior Regionals and finished fourth at the National Junior Championships two years later. After graduation from Stoneham High School, she pursued her studies at nearby Emmanuel College, where she later earned an associate's degree. The first podium came in 1988 when Kerrigan won the National Collegiate Championships, as well as three other competitions.
Theresa Martin was Kerrigan's coach till 1985, then she was trained for a while by Denise Morrissey, and finally became the ward of Evy and Mary Scotvold. The Scotvolds remained with her for the remainder of her athletic path.
Nancy Kerrigan shifted from junior level to the senior one in the late 1980s. Her debut at the 1988 United States Figure Skating Championships ended with the twelfth place. She won the New England and the Eastern Regionals the next year and improved her rankings at US Championships to fifth. Winning a bronze medal at the 1989 US Olympic Festival, Kerrigan returned to take the gold a year later.
Continuing to climb the rankings, Kerrigan finished fourth, third, and second at the US Championships in 1990, 1991, and 1992, respectively. The latter result helped her to join the United States Olympic team, along with winner Kristi Yamaguchi and third-place medalist Tonya Harding.
At the major sport event of the four years held in Albertville, France, Yamaguchi and Japan's Midori Ito were considered favorites. However, Kerrigan managed to intervene in the medal contention by finishing the short program in second, succeeding Yamaguchi. In the long program, both Kerrigan and Yamaguchi made mistakes but the latter took the gold. Kerrigan placed third, after the bronze winner Ito.
After the Olympics, Yamaguchi turned professional that automatically made Kerrigan the top-ranked skater in the United States. She proved her status by a victory at the US Championships in 1993. With her increasing popularity, Nancy received more and more endorsement contracts that became a good financial addition to her athletic achievements.
On the other hand, such huge national attention pressured Kerrigan and she began to stumble. A favorite of the 1993 World Championships in Prague, she placed first after the short program, but fell down to the ninth rank in the long and eventually became fifth overall. That failure upset Kerrigan a lot. Aspiring to regain her form, Nancy Kerrigan trained arduously. The practice paid off by a couple of wins closer to the end of 1993, at an event in Norway and the AT&T Pro-Am in the United States. At the US Championships of that same year, Kerrigan surpassed her more technically prepared compatriot, Tonya Harding, artistically and took the first place on the podium.
Before the US Championships of the next year, Nancy Kerrigan became a victim of an attack supposed to be organized with the involvement of Harding who was said to try to deprive Nancy of a place in the Olympic team. Kerrigan was injured by a man who hit her on the knee with a lead pipe and ran away. Fortunately, Kerrigan's bones remained unbroken but she had to leave the Championship because of the serious damage to her knee cap and quadriceps tendon.
Withdrawn from the nationals as well after the incident, Kerrigan didn't qualify for the Olympics. However, the US Figure Skating Association, taking into consideration the fact that she was the country's best shot at bringing home a gold medal, named her to the team off the qualification. Kerrigan had six weeks before the Winter Olympics to treat her injured knee. Harding who was allowed to remain in the Olympic team despite the suspicions of her direct involvement to the attack, showed below her best and wasn't a competitor to Kerrigan at all.
A World Championships winner, 17-years-old Oksana Baiul of Ukraine became the main rival for Kerrigan instead. Kerrigan led after the short program, and her free skate was a near-perfect routine, apart from a small mistake at the beginning. Baiul also made a minor mistake but otherwise skated flawlessly. In the end, four judges voted for Kerrigan and five gave their points for Baiul. Kerrigan took home the silver. Following the Olympics, Nancy Kerrigan retired from the sport since she turned professional. At the 2000 Goodwill Games, she earned her last medal, the bronze.
Upon turning professional, Nancy Kerrigan turned into a real media personality. Being incredibly popular for her triumphant come back after the attack, she used that fame to sign lots of endorsement contracts and to participate in various ice shows, including tours with Champions on Ice, Grease on Ice, Footloose on Ice, and Halloween on Ice. Her instructional book, titled Artistry on Ice, was published in 2003.
She has hosted several skating events, including an international competition produced by Lifetime television in 2002, and TV shows, including Saturday Night Live episode with Aretha Franklin as a musical guest. Kerrigan herself was a contestant in Flea Market Flip TV program and appeared on the 24 season of Dancing with the Stars.
Nancy recorded a song, The Distance, which she used during her performance at Brian Boitano's Skating Spectacular in January 2003. A year later, she performed a cover of Tina Turner's hit The Best for a tribute album. Kerrigan has also appeared on the screen in a number of movies, such as Blades of Glory figure-skating comedy, Fresh Off The Boat TV series, and the Christmas special episode Keeping Up with The Kardashians.

1996Nancy Kerrigan established the Nancy Kerrigan Foundation in honor of her mother. The main goal of the organization is to support researches on degenerative eye diseases and the institutions which help the visually impaired. The organization has collaborated with the Foundation Fighting Blindness.
Nancy Kerrigan has been a national spokeswoman for Fight for Sight since 2003. She has also served as a spokesperson for Lions Clubs International, Spalding Rehabilitation Hospital, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and the Foundation Fighting Blindness.
Quotations:
"I was a tomboy who liked to play rough just like my two older brothers. That's probably why I liked the athletic part of skating – especially the jumping!"
"My parents never pressured me to skate. They always said I could quit if I wanted to. They only expected me to skate when they had already paid for the expensive lessons. But, otherwise, they said I could do what I wanted to do."
"People would ask me why I was doing what I was doing – but I always told them that I just loved to skate. There was no other explanation."
"There is no age, height, or weight requirement to skate. It is good exercise no matter what your age is. If you want to be competitive, most start young. But, I practice with many adult competitors."
"People are really sick of seeing the winner not win and what the public thinks should happen."
"It was never about winning medals or being famous."
"I like to try all kinds of styles so it always challenges me and forces me to try to look different."
"Doubt yourself and you doubt everything you see. Judge yourself and you judge everything you see. But if you listen to the sound of your own voice, you can rise above doubt and judgment. And you can see forever."
Physical Characteristics: Nancy Kerrigan is 1.62 meters tall.
Nancy Kerrigan married Jerry Solomon, her agent, on September 9, 1995. The family produced three children, Matthew Eric, Brian Russell, and Nicole Elizabeth. According to Nancy, all the three can skate though they didn't follow in their famous mother's footsteps.
