Since 1966 he has been a photographer for the Boston Herald American and from 1964 to 1966 was a freelance photographer. His photographs have appeared in such periodicals as Newsweek, Time and Life.
He has won numerous awards, including Boston Press Photographer of the year in 1978, American Academy of Achievement "Golden Plate” Award in 1977, the Pulitzer Prize for news photography in 1976 and 1977, the University of Missouri "News Photo of the Year" in 1976 and 1977, Headliners Club "Picture of the Year" in 1976 and 1977, World Press "Photo of the Year" in 1976 (The Hague), United Press International "Picture of the Year" in 1976, 1977, and 1978, International Firefighters Award in 1976 and 1977 and Associated Press "Spot News Picture of the Year" in 1967 and 1976. Forman was a National Press Photographer of the Year regional winner in 1973 and 1978.
He was a Nieman Fellow in Journalism at Harvard University, Cambridge, in 1979. Forman is vice-president of the Boston Press Photographers Association and belongs to the NPA.
