In 1993, for the first First Legislative Assembly of Delhi he contested the elections as a BJP candidate and was elected.
He defeated Jitender Singh Shunty of Bhartiya Janata Party by a margin of 11,731 votes in the 2015 Delhi Legislative Assembly elections.
He is a member of the Aam Aadmi Party and represents the Shahdara constituency of Delhi. Ram Niwas Goel is a member of the Aam Aadmi Party.
