Barry Siegel was born on September 7, 1949 in Saint Louis, Missouri, United States.
Barry Siegel studied at Pomona College and earned a bachelor's degree in English literature. Some time later he enrolled at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, where he earned a master's degree in 1972.
Barry Siegel began his career at the Los Angeles Times in 1976 as a staff writer in the feature section. In 1980 he became a roving national correspondent. In 2003, Barry Siegel left the Los Angeles Times to become the founding director of the new literary journalism program at UC Irvine.
Barry Siegel’s writings are often inspired by true-life events. His first book, A Death in White Bear Lack: The True Chronicle of an All-American Town tells the true story of a child apparently murdered by his adoptive mother. Siegel’s second book, Shades of Grey: Ordinary People in Extraordinary Circumstances, incorporates a multitude of characters and situations. The Perfect Witness, Siegel’s third work, centers on the tenuous relationship between Greg Monarch and Ira Sullivan and the court case that reunites the two former friends and ex-partners after a prolonged estrangement.
All in all, Barry wrote eight books, including five volumes of narrative nonfiction and three novels set in imaginary Chumash County on the central coast of California.
