Ray Russell was born on September 4, 1924, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He was the son of William James and Margaret (Otto) Russell.
Ray studied at the Chicago Conservatory of Music and the Goodman Memorial Institute.
Russell's most famous short fiction is "Sardonicus", which appeared in the January 1961 issue of Playboy magazine, and was subsequently adapted by Russell into a screenplay for William Castle's film version, titled Mr. Sardonicus. American writer Stephen King called "Sardonicus" "perhaps the finest example of the modern gothic ever written". "Sardonicus" was part of a trio of stories with "Sanguinarius" and "Sagittarius".
Russell was also one of the screenwriters for Roger Corman's X (also known as X: The Man With the X-Ray Eyes) and The Premature Burial (based on the Edgar Allan Poe short story). He served as editor to Playboy beginning from 1954, an experience he described as a “delightful detour” from his main purpose of writing.

Quotations:
“To paraphrase the late Christopher Hitchens, religion was mankind’s first and therefore worst tool for understanding the world.”
“Was this humanity? Was this nobility? Was this the Christian glory that presumed to hold itself above the heathen Turk? To suffer innocents be sacrificed on an altar of corruption, merely that a lofty family be spared discomfiture? Oh, this was tenfold more abominable than the crime itself, that high authority should wink at it!”
“Beelzebub is the name of Lucifer’s lieutenant. The name Beelzebub, in Hebrew, means Lord of the Flies.”
On September 5, 1950, Russell married Ada Beth Stevens. They had two children - Marc Antony and Amanda.
