Bellman briefly went to a local school, but was educated mainly by private tutors.
In 1757, Belman entered the service of the State Class Bank, but in 1764 he left the service. In 1765 he again found a job at the General Directorate of Customs, where by 1770 he had risen to the rank of a full-time clerk, but in 1771 the management was abolished. In 1775, Belman was appointed secretary of the number lottery.
