George Rockas was a highly respected member of the East Rand Greek community of Guateng. He was married to Stavroula (nee Kotsakis) and was father to Basil Rockas, Dimitra Rockas-Eftychis , Angelique Rockas and Georgina Rockas. He was responsible for saving family relatives from Artemision, and families from his wife`s village Kalamara , Messinia from poverty by bringng them to South Africa and offering them work and support.
Background
George Rockas was born in the village of Artemision, also known as Kakouri , into a large poor family of 13 children .
His father was named Spyros and his mother Dimitra . Several of the Rockas sons left for South Africa and America to seek a better life, send money home and help marry their sisters off as was the Greek custom then.
George also went to South Africa to help his older brothers with their businesses and showed an interest in boxing.
He first had a glimpse of his future wife Stavroula from a photo shown to him by a friend James Christakopoulos. Stavroula came from a wealthy land owning family in the Eua , Kalamara, region of Messinia .

Career
George Rockas managed to build up a considerable property portfolio in South Africa by supervising the building works himself. He put his business acumen to use not only by providing excellent education for his 4 children,but he was also responsible for saving many Greek families from poverty. On Stavroula Rockas`s side this help was extended to the Dracopoulos and the Harbileiko families living in Kalamara , Kosta Georgakopoulos (related to Dimos Georgakopoulos husband of Stavroula`s sister Leukothea ) were all brought to SA and with George`s help managed in turn to help their families in Greece ..
On George`s Rockas`s side, George helped his sister`s Maritsa Kavasi `s family and their three sons , Spyros, George and Niko from Tripoli ; from his own village ,Artemision, George helped his relatives, the family Kousiakis with sons Yannis, Nikos and Kostas Kousiakis.. ,

Georgina Rockas is a much admired artist for her very fine and delicate depictions of Byzantine frescoes.

Basil Rockas , born on the 10th October 1946 in Benoni South Africa was the first born son of George and Stavroula Rockas and had three sisters, Dimitra, Angelique and Georgina .
