James Scullin served a term in the House of Representatives as Member for Corangamite (1910–13). In federal parliament, Scullin quickly earned a reputation as an impressive and formidable parliamentary debater. Scullin retained the Labor Party leadership after the defeat of his government in 1931, remaining as Leader of the Opposition until 1935. Scullin was regarded as a valuable adviser to the Prime Minister. James Scullin retired from parliament in 1949.
Active in trade union affairs and the Labor Party for most of his adult life, James Scullin served a term in the House of Representatives as Member for Corangamite (1910–13). He spoke on a wide range of issues over the three years of his term, but concentrated especially on matters relating to taxation and the powers of the Commonwealth. . In 1918 Scullin unsuccessfully contested a by-election for Corangamite. He became more radical and inflammatory, especially in his assessments of the war and in his support for the Irish struggle against British rule.
