1922 graduate Faculty of Social Sciences, Moscow University. 1929 completed postgraduate studies at Institute of History, Russian Association of Social Sciences Research Institutes.
1922-1936 lecturer, Communist University of the Workers of the East. 1927-1931 also lecturer, Sverdlov communist University. 1934-1942 lecturer, from 1942 professor, from 1943 head, Chair of the History of the Ancient World, History Faculty, Moscow University.
1938-1948 senior associate, from 1948 head, Ancient History Section, Institute of History, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. Specialized in the history of the Roman Republic and Empire. Also did research on historiography.
