In 1959 Peter received Bachelor of Arts at Elmhurst College. Then he got Bachelor of Divinity at Eden Theological Seminary in 1962. Finally, he earned Doctor of Philosophy at Harvard University in 1969.
Peter Schmiechen started his career in 1962 as an ordained minister of the United Church of Christ. After that he left for Everett, where he worked as a pastor of United Church of Christ until 1965. For a year he held the position of a staff member at the Biennial Emphasis Committee on Urbanization and the Church.
Since 1966 Peter started working for Elmhurst College, where he began as instructor, and became the professor of theology and religion in 1966 - 1985. For about 10 years he even was a dean of the college. Starting from 1985 Peter serves as a professor of theology and president of seminary at the Lancaster Theological Seminary, and since 1975 he has been the member of Council for Higher Education at the United Church of Christ. Moreover, Peret was a chairperson of the Council of Presidents of the Closely Related Seminaries of the United Church of Christ during 1989 - 1993.
