Suter received a Master of Science degree in Biology from the University of Basel in 1984. Four years later he earned his Ph.D. from the same university.
Suter began his career as a research assistant of biotechnology department at Ciba-Geigy Ltd. (nowadays Novartis International AG) in 1985. Three years later he became a research associate and postdoctoral fellow at the same company. Then in 1989, Ueli took the same positions of the department of neurobiology at Stanford University School of Medicine, where he worked until 1992. Since 1993 he has been a professor at the Institute of Molecular Health Sciences of ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich).
Suter is a member of the American Society of Neurochemistry, Society for Neuroscience and Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association.
On June 3, 1988 Ueli Suter married Annemarie Felix. They have two children.
