He graduated from Voronezh Gymnasium in 1864, the Law Department of Moscow University in 1868
He was a teacher of philosophy of law at Demidov Lyceum (Yaroslavl, 1872–1876). Astafyef was a chief conciliator in the South-Western Territory in late 1870's. He was appointed head of the university department of Katkov Lyceum in Moscow between 1881–1890. At the same time he worked in the Moscow Bureau of Sensorship since 1885. Also he was a privat-docent of Moscow University since 1890. Astafyev was a member of Moscow Psychological Society. He owned a printing house. He wrote than 10 books.
