In 1874 Yuly Alekseevich graduated from the Voronezh gymnasium and in 1878 faculty of mathematics at Moscow University. Then he went to the department of law. In 1881 he took part in student unrest due to which he was expelled from the University and exiled from Moscow. In 1882 Yuly Alekseevich graduated from Kharkov University.
In 1888 Yuly Alekseevich worked as a statistician in Kharkov. Since May 1890 in Poltava. In 1897 Yuly Alekseevich worked as an editor for Bulletin of education magazine. After the October revolution, he contributed to the creation of the Writers Club and the journalist Union.
Yuly Alekseyevich was one of the founders (1897) and permanent Chairman of the literary circle Sreda, Chairman of the Board of Publishing writers in Moscow as well as Chairman of the literature society.
