Graduate theological seminary. 1889 graduate Medical Faculty, Kiev University.
1874 began to record folk songs. In his student years sang in North. V. Lysenko’s choir. After graduating from University physician in village Okhmatov.
Organized a chorus of local peasants, which performed Ukraine songs in folklore harmonization, preserving distinctive features of peasants’ manner of singing and polyphony. Under his direction this choir toured many Ukraine cities. From 1918 member, Ethnographic Commission, Ukraine Academy of Sciences.
Lectured on folk songs at Kiev’s Lysenko Institute of Music and Drama. During his last years he worked with the Dumka Chorus.
