Ames was born on November 2, 1929 in Portland, Oregon, United States; the daughter of Dorothy Adams and actor Byron Foulger.
Ames graduated from the University High School. Also she attended the University of California in Los Angeles.
Ames made her acting debut in the "Pilgrimage play" in 1949. She then performed with her parents in a production of "One Foot in Heaven" at the renowned Pasadena Playhouse. There, she also starred in "Broadway Jones", "The Circle" and "King of Hearts".
In the early 1950s Rachel began to cooperate with Paramount Pictures and appeared under the stage name Judith Ames in such films as "When Worlds Collide", 1951 and "Toast to Our Brother", 1951. She had an uncredited role in the film noir "The Turning Point", 1952 and a minor role in the film "Western Arrowhead", 1953. Also Ames starred in the Western comedy "Ricochet Romance", 1954.
She had a regular role on prime-time television, where she played Policewoman Sandy McAllister on "The Lineup" in that program's final season during 1959. Rachel also guest starred in "The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp", "The Virginian", "Ironside", "Wagon Train", "Trackdown", "Ben Casey", "Perry Mason" and "Alfred Hitchcock Presents". In addition, she appeared in a lead role in the film "Western Gunfighters of Abilene", 1960.
On February 23, 1964, Ames debuted on ABC's daytime serial "General Hospital" playing Audrey Hardy. She starred in that serial until her contract was over in 2003, but she continued to appear from time-to-time on a recurring basis and announced her retirement in 2007. Ames again appeared in "General Hospital" in April 2013 in order to coincide with General Hospital's 50th anniversary and again on October 30, 2015.
On January 31, 1952 Rachel Ames married Jack Genung. They have a daughter, Susan. On June 14, 1968 she married Barry Cahill. They have a daughter, Christine and two grandchildren, Jocelyn and Marc.
