Rachel McAdams is a Canadian actress, who found her big breakthrough when she was cast as Regina in the teen comedy Mean Girl. The actress has also appeared in box-office hits like Wedding Crashers, The Family Stone, The Time Traveler's Wife, Sherlock Holmes, and The Vow. She received her first Oscar nomination for her role as a Boston Globe reporter in the 2015 drama Spotlight.
Background
Ethnicity:
Rachel McAdams is of English, Welsh, Irish, Scottish, Dutch, and German descent.
Rachel McAdams was born on November 17, 1978, in London, Ontario, Canada. Her father, Lance, worked as a mover, and her mother, Sandra, worked as a nurse. Together, they raised McAdams and her younger siblings, sister Kayleen and brother Daniel.
Education
McAdams was active in sports in her childhood and also remained active in sports until 18. Rachel had won several state-level awards in various contests. Rachel started figure skating at the age of 4. At 9, she received an offer to train for skating in Toronto but turned down the offer. So, it became just her hobby.
She attended the Myrtle Street Public School before joining the Central Elgin Collegiate Institute. She participated in sports and served on the student council. Through high school, McAdams acted in local productions. She even won an award in 1995 at the Sears Ontario Drama Festival.
She planned to enroll in social sciences at the University of Western Ontario but was encouraged by her high school drama teacher to continue acting. After moving to Toronto, she worked with the Necessary Angel Theatre Group. She also enrolled in the Drama program at York University and graduated with an honors Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2001.
McAdams hit the ground running early in her career. She landed television roles before she even graduated from university. After performing in a TV pilot that was not picked up for network television (Shotgun Love Dolls, 2001), she was cast in guest appearances in series such as The Famous Jett Jackson (2001) and Earth: Final Conflict (2002).
She made her film debut one year later, in the Canadian/Italian-produced film My Name is Tanino. Her first Hollywood movie also happened in 2002. She played a high school student in The Hot Chick whose body is magically swapped with that of a criminal.
She was nominated for a Genie Award for her supporting performance as the younger version of Wendy Crewson’s character in Barbara Willis Sweete’s indie drama Perfect Pie (2002). In 2004, she won a Gemini Award for her supporting performance as a Shakespearean actor who falls for an American star in the first season of the acclaimed TMN series Slings & Arrows.
McAdams achieved a major career breakthrough in 2004. She starred as a sadistic but endearing high school social queen opposite Lindsay Lohan in the Tina Fey-scripted hit movie Mean Girls (2004). Appearing with co-stars Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Seyfried, the film opened doors for the budding actress. The film was a huge commercial hit and she was highly praised for her role.
McAdams starred as Allie, a vivacious upper-class woman who must choose between her wealthy fiancé (James Marsden) and her first love (Ryan Gosling), in the adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’s best-selling novel The Notebook. The movie did well at the box office and received several awards. She caught the eye of the public in both films, winning MTV Movie Awards in 2005 for breakthrough female (Mean Girls) and for the best kiss (The Notebook).
In 2005, McAdams appeared in several films that achieved great commercial success, including the comedy Wedding Crashers, the thriller Red Eye and the dramedy The Family Stone. She had become very popular by now and was in much demand. She was invited along with Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley to appear on the March 2006 cover of Vanity Fair. She, however, opted out when she learned it was a session without clothes.
In what many in the industry viewed as an unusual move made at the height of her career, McAdams took a break from 2006 to 2007 to focus on herself. She got several lucrative movie offers which she turned down. She returned to the big screen in late 2007 with the movie Married Life in which she played Kay, a young widow who is pursued by two considerably older men played by Pierce Brosnan and Chris Cooper. She then returned to more mainstream studio fare.
McAdams returned to work in 2008, appearing in Married Life and The Lucky Ones, which both failed to achieve box-office success. Things turned around in 2009, with roles in higher-grossing films like State of Play, The Time Traveler's Wife, and Sherlock Holmes.
Her return to prominence continued over the next few years, with critically acclaimed roles in Morning Glory (2010) and Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris (2011) - in which McAdams and her co-stars received a nomination for the Screen Actors Guild Award (for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture).
McAdams achieved her biggest box-office success to date ($196 million worldwide) with her leading role in the 2012 drama The Vow. The film is based on the true story of a husband (Channing Tatum) who tries to rebuild his relationship with his wife (McAdams) after a car crash injury impairs her memory.
She went on to star in the romantic drama To the Wonder (2012), the erotic thriller Passion (2012), the romantic comedy About Time (2013), and the espionage thriller A Most Wanted Man (2014). McAdams enjoyed an especially productive year in 2015. She co-starred in three feature films, voiced the role of the mother in the animated adaptation of the classic fairy tale The Little Prince (2015), and earned positive reviews in the otherwise derided second season of the HBO crime drama True Detective (2015).
Her film roles that year included a love interest in Cameron Crowe’s widely panned Aloha (2015), a tragic wife to Jake Gyllenhaal’s professional boxer in Southpaw (2015), and Boston Globe investigative reporter Sacha Pfeiffer in Spotlight (2015). The latter film earned McAdams an Oscar nomination and a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for best-supporting actress. Spotlight won the Academy Award and Independent Spirit Award for Best Picture and picked up several other high-profile awards for the best ensemble cast.
In 2016, the actress appeared in the superhero blockbuster Doctor Strange, opposite Benedict Cumberbatch. She then starred in the sexually charged drama Disobedience (2017), before teaming up with Jason Bateman for the dark comedy Game Night (2018). She returned to work 16 months after giving birth to her son to begin filming Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020).
