Macroeconomic Theory: Introduced in French planning, in the mid-1960s, the differentiation between ‘exposed’, and ‘sheltered’ sectors and proposed the theory of ‘competitive economies’ (‘economies concurrencées’) for open economies, which emphasised supply and led to the supply-oriented policies of the French Vlth and Vllth Plans. More general than the ‘Scandinavian model’, the ‘competitive economies’ theory does not only consider price and wage determination but is a complete theory of overall equilibrium and growth. In 1980, the first version was generalised in a dynamic one, that unifies demandand supply-oriented approaches.
The Keynesian approach is valuable in the short term but intertemporal adjustments are such that economy appears as supply-driven in the long term.
Regional Theory: Emphasised both the important impact of regional factors on national development and the role of supply at the regional level. Proposed to distinguish ‘demand-located’ industries (where regional demand determines regional production) and ‘free-located’ industries (where, in the medium term, regional production depends on the regional capital stock, this latter being itself determined by regional investments and the location behaviour of multiregional firms).
Modelling (for the French economy): Main builder of FIFI (a national medium-term model used for the Vlth and Vllth Plans). Project leader and builder of REGINA (a regional-national
model used for the Vllth Plan), MOGLI (annual short-term-medium-term model), PROTEE (quarterly) and ANAIS (input-output).
National Accounting: Proposed a general framework for consistent and balanced national accounts at constant prices.
Adjustments terms are introduced, and interpreted in terms both of price transfers and productivity gains. It is one of the foundations of the French method of the ‘surplus accounts’.
Regional Accounting: Built a multiand inter-regional input-output table for the French economy.
