( "This is an important work for understanding the roots ...)
"This is an important work for understanding the roots of the Green movement in Germany and, in many ways, of environmental movements elsewhere. The book is well organized, readable, and based on impressive research." —Choice "This volume should be required reading for all students of environemntal ideology and movements." —Environment "... the book stands as a sobering study in the relationship of environmentalism to politics." —Forest & Conservation History "... a balanced and authoritative analysis... " —The Ecologist "A first-rate contribution, both valuable and interesting. Dominick makes a strong and well-supported case that a popular movement for environmental protection has existed for over a century in Germany... This history is highly relevant to understanding recent German environmental politics."Â —Richard N. L. Andrews

(Liebknecht (1826-1900) significantly influenced the shape...)
Liebknecht (1826-1900) significantly influenced the shape and destiny of the German Socialist movement and dominated its Marxist wing. He was involved in several abortive insurrections in Germany, was imprisoned there, and after his release, was exiled to England where he worked closely with Engels and Marx. After his return to Germany, his influence led ultimately to the founding of the Social Democratic party. Originally published in 1982.
