(The leading expert in Post-Polio Syndrome exposes the lin...)
The leading expert in Post-Polio Syndrome exposes the link between the polio disease that was 'cured' 50 years ago and the debilitating health problems 80 percent of the polio survivors are experiencing today. Polio is a disease of paradoxes, the major one being that although the threat of the 'dreaded disease' ended with the Salk vaccine in 1954, many polio survivors are now experiencing the onset of Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS), new, but related symptoms which may include chronic fatigue, muscle weakness, intolerance to cold, joint pain and more. In his groundbreaking book, Dr. Bruno has sounded an alarming wake-up call for both doctors and PPS sufferers, including a large number who were originally misdiagnosed with something other than polio and can now pursue the medical help they need.

In 1977 Richard L. Bruno received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Springfield College. In 1981 he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Yeshiva University.
From 1978 to 1981 Richard L. Bruno was a clinical research scientist at New York State Psychiatric Institute. From 1981 to 1984 he was a fellow at Columbia University. From 1984 to 1988 Bruno served as a clinical research coordinator of the faculty of medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons. In 1984, Bruno organized and is the Chairperson of the International Post-Polio Task Force, which promotes Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS) research, education, and treatment in 25 countries. In 1989, he created (and directed) the Post-Polio Rehabilitation and Research Service at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, which was the first center for the study and comprehensive treatment of PPS. From 1998 until 2010, he directed The Post-Polio Institute at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center. He was an associate professor at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
In The Polio Paradox: Uncovering the Hidden History of Polio to Understand and Treat "Post-Polio Syndrome" and Chronic Fatigue, Bruno provides a history, explains the physical and psychological damage caused by polio, and notes that its remnants have come back to again afflict more than half of two million polio survivors who are now in their fifties and sixties.
He is a contributor to medical journals, including Disability and Society, Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, Journal of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Neurology, American Journal of Medicine, and Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences. He is a contributing writer to Salon.com and Total Access.

2002Richard L. Bruno is a clinical psychophysiologist and author who specializes in the treatment of pain, fatigue, stress, and post-polio sequelae (PPS). He has developed a comprehensive, multidisciplinary treatment program that can alleviate PPS. In his book, The Polio Parado, he goes beyond his study of polio, and "describes the remarkable parallels between the polio epidemics, PPS, and today’s epidemics of fibromyalgia, myalgic encephalomyelitis, and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)." What Bruno suspects is that people with CFS today and who were born before the discovery of the Salk vaccine in 1955, may have had a mild case of polio as children and might actually have PPS today, not CFS.
In 1999, Bruno performed the first study of the psychophysiology of chronic fatigue in children and adolescents, confirming that chronic fatigue is related to impaired attention that is likely due to brain activating system damage, findings presented to the N.I.H. State of the Art Workshop on Chronic Fatigue in Adolescents.
Bruno is developing Internet Post-Polio Clinics, the first to be held in Gujarat Hospital, where he will train local doctors and then oversee their evaluation and treatment of individual patients via video link to India. Bruno's training materials and the evaluation and treatment sessions will be recorded and made available via the Indian Medical Association website.
Richard L. Bruno is a member of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine, the American Psychological Association, the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback, the Federation of Behavioral, Psychological, and Cognitive Sciences, New Jersey Psychological Association, the Society for Psychophysiological Research. He is also a charter member of the International Organization of Psychophysiology.
On May 28, 1983, Richard L. Bruno married Nancy M. Frick.
