in 1964 Knapp received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York, United States. In two years he studied at Rutgers University in New Jersey, United States. He became a Master of Library and Information Science.
In 1974 Knapp was a student of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States. Richard received a Master of Fine Arts degree. He wrote his thesis on "Spirit and Psychic Photography." He studied under Ray Metzker, William Giles, Van Deren Coke, and Beaumont Newhall.
Knapp has been employed as a photography instructor, first at the University of New Mexico, from 1975 to 1978, and as of this writing at the University of Albuquerque. From 1966 to 1967 Richard worked as a librarian for the Peace Corps in Nepal. In 1967 he worked at the University of Rochester. Richard worked there for three years.
In 1978 NEA awarded him a Photographer's Fellowship. Knapp specializes in photo-collage and altered photographs and describes his technique in these terms: "Among other things, I scratch, cut and tear my black-and-white chemically toned, and reassemble the pieces into collages."
