family therapist social worker author
Richard C. Langsen was born on March 5, 1953, in Newton, New Jersey, United States.
Richard C. Langsen received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Northern Colorado in 1976. Six years later, he earned a Master of Social Work degree from Hunter College of the City University of New York.
To develop his skills in social works, he also attended the Ackerman Institute for the Family from 1984 to 1986.
Richard C. Langsen started his career in the field of social work in 1984 when he became a clinical social worker in Portland, Oregon. Since then, he has collaborated with other doctors and specialists, and no hospital or groups. He has also taught psychology at Marylhurst College.
Langsen published the first book, ‘When Someone in the Family Drinks Too Much’, in 1996. The volume illustrated by his wife explains what alcoholism is, describes warning signs and associated behaviors, and considers differing reactions among the various family members who are affected. It was praised for its accessibility to children.
Nowadays, Langsen pursues his activity in the field serving as a Clinical Social Worker Specialist in Clackamas, Oregon.
Richard C. Langsen is an accomplished social work specialist who has more than thirty-five years of experiences of working with addictive family systems.
In contrast with other volumes dedicated to help children study the problem of alcoholism which are poorly illustrated and have too much theory, Langsen’s book ‘When Someone in the Family Drinks Too Much’ was accepted well both by critics and young readers due to its simplicity and accessibility for the young generation. According to School Library Journal contributor Marsha McGrath, it is “a reassuring approach to a problem that affects so many children in today’s society” which “fills a void” for primary graders as an appealing nonfiction work addressing alcoholism.
