He migrated to the U.S. when he was twenty, and began work in New York. After first being employed with B. L. Gilbert, Mr. Smith joined the larger office of Richard M. Hunt, where he assisted in preparting plans for the huge Biltmore House in Asheville, N. C. Sent later to supervise the erection of the mansion, he made his home in the city during the six years the building was under construction, later set up an office for architectural practice.
In 1913 he became a member of the North Carolina Chapter, A. I. A., and continued active in the profession during his remaining years.
