Richard Doggett Dean, American educator, engineer.


Dean, Richard Doggett was born on September 10, 1884 in Nesbitt, Mississippi, United States. Son of Thomas Jefferson and Eliza Francis (Doggett) Dean.


Student Randall U. School, Hernando, Mississippi, 1900-1904. Bachelor of Science, Mississippi State, 1908, post graduate in electrical engineering, 1909. Doctor of Dental Surgery, University of Tennessee, 1922, M.I)., 1931.


Inspector Municipal Elec. Testing laboratories, Seattle, 1909-1912. Director, 1912-1918; active practice dentistry, Memphis, 1922-1924, student instructor University of Tennessee College Dentistry, 1922, professor applied dental physics, metallurgical and materials, 1922-1924, professor surgery and pathological, chief div. oral medicine and surgery since 1924, dean College of Dentistry since 1941.

Served in S.A.T.C., United States Army, 1918. Expert consultant Army Service Forces, 1944. Associates and alumni of University of Tennessee presented to University of Tennessee the likenesses of Doctor Dean and of his wife, Doctor Marguerite Dean, done in oils, which are hanging on the walls of new dental building, 1948.

Member American, Tennessee dental associations, International Association Dental Research, Ninth District Dental Society, Omicron Kappa Epsilon, Alpha Omega Alpha, Delta Sigma Delta. Research and investigation (with wife) in physical properties of dental materials, bacteriological, serol. and immunogenic studies on Vincent’s Infection, bacteriophage as a therapeutic measure in treatment of dental pulps, etc.
