This book is designed to accomplish a twofold purpose. Primarily, it is intended as an undergraduate price theory textbook. Secondarily, I hope that it will provide a satisfactory review of the major principles of price theory and resource allocation for graduate students in economics.

As a graduate student in the late 1940s my primary interest was in labour economics. Because of the institutional nature of that field at the time, I soon turned my attention to price theory where my main interest has remained up to the present. I have also been concerned with lesserdeveloped economies, this interest stemming from World War I experiences in India and China, from extended periods of Chile and Taiwan, and from shorter visits to various other lesser-developed countries.
Since the early 1970s, I have spent much time on unconventional approaches to the teaching of elementary economics, believing that we attempt to do too much and succeed in doing too little. Through public lectures, newspaper columns, radio and television lectures I have made some attempt to convey basic economic principles to the non-university public, a segment of the population that we economists have long neglected.
