Riichir Hoashi was born in Fukuoka Prefecture.
Graduated from Tokyo Hogakuin (Law School). Went to U.S. (1901), studied first at South California University and then at Religion and Philosophy Department of Chicago University from which he graduated with degree in philosophy and distinction of being a conscientious Christian scholar.
In the US began teaching at Waseda University, subsequently being appointed professor, thence until retirement under age limit (1942) held chairs of philosophy, ethics and other subjects for over twenty years making extensive introduction of philosophical thoughts of John Dewey and other philosophers. After war slowed himself as a liberal, progressive-minded Christian, unshackled by creeds of arrival of a new democratic religion and showing understanding and sympathy for peace movement.
