Robert Citino was born on June 19, 1958 in Cleveland, Ohio. He is the son of John D. Citino, a purchasing agent, and Mildred R. Citino (Bunasky), a secretary.
Robert Citino studied at Saint Ignatius High School. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Ohio State University in 1978. Robert also earned his Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from Indiana University in 1980 and 1984.
From 1984 to 1991 Robert Citino taught as a professor at Liberal Arts Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio, and from 1991 to 2008 at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. In 2008 and 2009 he was Distinguished Visiting Professor of Military History at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. From 2009 to 2011, he worked as an Associate Professor at the History Department of the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas.
From 2013 to 2014 and from 2014 to 2015, Robert was a holder of the Harold Keith Johnson's Chair of Military History Scholar-in-Residence at the Department of National Security and Strategy of the United States Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Since 2013 he had been a Professor of History at the History Department of the UNT. His current research interests are German and US military history as well as recent European history. In 2019 Robert was appointed as an Adjunct Professor of History at Arizona State University and University of New Orleans.
Citino held several lectures about the Perspectives in the Military History at the USAWC in 2010 and 2014. In 2013, he was a Contemporary History Institute Speaker at Ohio University in Athens.
Robert is co-editor of the book series War, Weapons, and Technology. In addition, he was a reviewer for science publishers, from 2004 to 2006 - a book review editor of World War II Magazine and since 2009 - a columnist of the weblog Front and Center.
Occasionally he appears as a consultant to the History Channel. He gave interviews to newspapers and magazines such as Variety, The Washington Post and The Atlantic Monthly.
Citino is the author of several monographs, some of which have been awarded book prizes. He also contributed to anthologies and various journals, his articles have appeared in peer-reviewed journals such as American Historical Review, Journal of Strategic Studies, Historically Speaking, The Army Doctrine and Training Bulletin, and Revue d'Allemagne. He is considered one of the leading contemporary representatives of the operational history of World War II.

2016Citino has argued for changing the nomenclature of German military tactics. Though he uses the word Blitzkrieg in his books, he has always held to an opinion that it should be called by its proper German military term, Bewegungskrieg, or manoeuvre warfare.

Robert Citino is a member of the American Historical Association and the Historical Society as well as the Awards Committee Member of the Society for Military History, which he led until 2014 as Vice President.

Robert Citino married Roberta J. Peters, a homemaker, on August 24, 1979. Their marriage produced three children - Allison, Laura and Emily.
