In his youth Robert Davis worked as a compositor on the Carson Appeal and later was a reporter for the San Francisco Examiner, Call and Chronicle.
Robert Davis founded and edited Chic, a San Francisco fortnightly (1894). He then moved to New York and worked for the New York Journal-American (1895-1903) and N.Y. Sunday World (1903), and was managing editor of N.Y. Sunday News (1904).
Robert Davis also served as associate editor of Munsey’s Magazine and was founder and first managing editor of All-Story Magazine, Scrap Book, Railroad Man’s Magazine, Woman, The Ocean, The Live Wire and The Cavalier. He wrote the "Bob Davis Reveals" column for the New York Sun for fifteen years.
