Kane received a Bachelor of Science degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1953. Four years later he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree from Johns Hopkins University.
Kane began his career as an assistant professor of biochemistry at Brandeis University in 1958. Three years later he took a position of an assistant professor at Dartmouth Medical School. Then in 1966 Robert became an associate professor at the University of Hawaii. Since 1969 he has been professor at the same university.
Kane is a member of American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Society for Cell Biology, International Society of Development Biologists and Sigma Xi.
On April 11, 1970 Robert Kane married Nancy Kay Lind, with whom he divorced in June 1976.
