Kelley has been a freelance magazine photographer since 1969. From 1966 to 1969 he worked for Time Inc., as a contract photographer. He was a staff photographer with Life magazine from 1950 to 1966, during which time his photographs were used on sixteen covers of the magazine. Before that he was a contract photographer for Life from 1947 to 1950. His editorial photographs have seen print in dozens of Life picture essays. In earlier years he worked for the Seattle Times (1946-47) and the Seattle Post Intelligencer (1938-42).
