Robert William Kubey was born on July 20, 1952 in Berkeley, California, United States; the son of Sidney M. and Joan (Wise) Kubey.
Kubey earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, a Master of Arts in behavioral science and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Chicago.
Robert Kubey began his career at the University of Wisconsin—Madison as a lecturer in psychology in 1980. Four years later he became a lecturer in the Office of Continuing Education at the University of Chicago. At the same time, Robert also worked at the University of California, Irvine. In 1991 he was appointed as an associate professor of communication at Rutgers University, later becoming first a research director of Media Education Laboratory, then a director of the master’s program in communication and information studied. From 1985 to 1991 Kubey served at Stanford University as an assistant professor. He also was a member of faculty at Summer Institute on Media Education at Harvard University, moderator and consultant for instructional videotapes on media education and a member of the board of directors of New Jersey chapter at National Committee for the Prevention of Child Abuse.
Robert Kubey was an Annenberg Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania, and a National Institute of Mental Health Research Fellow. He published over 50 journal articles and book chapters. His latest book is Creating Television: Conversations with the People Behind 50 Years of American TV. Other books include Media Literacy in the Information Age and Television and the Quality of Life: How Viewing Shapes Everyday Experience, co-authored with Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. Kubey also co-edits a series of research volumes on media literacy for Lawrence Erlbaum Associates. Robert wrote articles for Scientific American, the New York Times, and Newsweek and served as a consultant to many groups including The Discovery Channel, British Film Institute, U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary, Banff International Television Festival, Getty Center for Arts Education, and Nickelodeon and MTV Networks.
Robert William Kubey was listed as a noteworthy communication educator, consultant, researcher by Marquis Who's Who. He was also the recipient of a grant from the Donald McGannon Communication Research Center for the Study Issues in Policy and Ethics and grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
