In our "youth culture" society we talk a lot about preparation for marriage and the hazards which face young couples, but seldom consider the problems of middle-aged married couples. Many of us assume that if a marriage works for 15 to 20 years, it is a lead-pipe cinch. This just isn't true. Middlescence is a crisis period when couples may face some of their toughest battles: worry over kids and how to support them; aging parents who may need help; and the psychological problems which can crop up in the middle years. On top of all this the marriage relationship itself may be showing signs of neglect. Just when couples need each other most, they find they're facing a spouse gap. In order to middlescent married couples understand some of their problems, the authors lead them back to their dating days, then on to the early gaps in marriage when the honeymoon wss over and routine set in, and through the middlescent malaise. Finally the authors propose some exciting possibilities for bridging the spouse gap through the couple's rediscovery of one another.
