Robert Routh received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and English from Whittier College, California, in 1949, and a Master of Arts in Instructional Media from California State University at Long Beach in 1970.
Since 1966 Robert Routh has been an associate professor of photography at Cal State Long Beach. From 1964 to 1966 he taught at Bellflower High School in Bellflower, California, and before that was owner/manager of a photo equipment store (1950-1965).
Since 1968 Robert Routh has been a member of the National Photography Instructors Association, acting as president, board member, and editor of their monthly newsletter and magazine quarterly. He is vice-president of the International Visual Literacy Association, of which he has been a member since 1976. Since 1970 he has been a member of SPE and now serves as chairman of the Western region.
Robert Routh, who was elected an associate of the Photographic Society of America in 1967, has been chairman of their Education/Scholarship Committee since 1964. He has been a member of the Friends of Photography since 1970.
