(The Other America provides insight into the origins of th...)
The Other America provides insight into the origins of the complex racial problems facing America. It discusses the pragmatic economic reasons for slavery in Colonial America and in the United States. The book examines how the legacy of slavery was perpetuated during the years of Jim Crow. And how the accomplishments of the Civil Rights Movement have mitigated, but have not eliminated, prejudice and discrimination in American culture. It concludes with an overview of the events, following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., that have shaped the African American experience as the twentieth century came to a close.

He has written on the African-American experience because as a teacher he is appalled that this subject is rarely discussed in the public school system. Most secondary textbooks barely address African-American history in a meaningful manner. According to Walsh, understanding of the African-American experience is basic to any effort directed at eliminating racism in the United States.
