Robert was educated at the University College Cork and later the University of Leeds where he earned Doctor of Philosophy in 1974.
Robert Anthony Welch was Emeritus Professor of English in the Faculty of Arts, and former Dean of the Faculty at the University of Ulster. He joined the University in 1984 as Professor of English and head of the School of English, Media, and Theatre Studies having previously taught at the School of English, University of Leeds, and the University of Ife in Nigeria.
A novelist and poet as well as a critic and editor, he published "The Oxford Companion to Irish Literature" in 1996. His first published volume of poetry was "Muskerry" followed by "Secret Societies" and "The Blue Formica Table", and "The Evergreen Road." A new collection titled "Constanza" was published in July 2010. He was also a general editor of a series published by Colin Smythe.
Robert is a Nationalist.
On June 30, 1970, Robert married Angela Welch, with whom he had four children: Rachel, Killian, Egan, and Tiernan Welch.
