Hackett began his career as an instructor of Latin and English at Manhattan College High School in 1964 and had held it for four years. In 1966, he took a position of a director of sports information at Fordham University. Then in 1973, Roger became an associate editor at Bill Communications, Inc.
He served as an editor at Columbia University from 1980 to 1998. In 1998, he was appointed an executive assistant and associate vice president of public affairs at the same university. In 2000, Hackett became a communications coordinator at Columbia University. Since 2003 he has been a president of Herkwood Commission.
