(Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s (Scottish, 1868-1928) textile...)
Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s (Scottish, 1868-1928) textile designs are not widely known—unlike his architecture, furniture, and watercolors. Fortunately, many of his original drawings for textile designs, made between 1915 and 1923, have survived and are presented in this book, an expanded and revised edition of Mackintosh: Textile Designs (John Murray, 1982). Roger Billcliffe is a noted expert on Scottish art and on Mackintosh in particular. His previous books include Mackintosh Watercolours (Taplinger, 1978); Charles Rennie Mackintosh: The Complete Furniture, Furniture Drawings and Interior Designs (Taplinger, 1979), and Mackintosh Furniture (1984). 112 pages, 90 full-color reproductions, size: 9 x 11 1/2". Casebound book with dust jacket.

(The Scottish Colourists are acclaimed as a group of paint...)
The Scottish Colourists are acclaimed as a group of painters of exceptional originality. The strong, emotive colours, fluent brushwork and sense of pattern marked their paintings as different from, and more advanced than, anything seen in Britain before the appearance of the Vorticists in 1914. The text sets out to confirm the reputation of these four painters, and to reassess their work in the context of 20th century British painting.

(In this study, Roger Billcliffe not only treats the indiv...)
In this study, Roger Billcliffe not only treats the individual artists of the Glasgow Shool of Painting comprehensively, but also demonstrates that, as a group, the Glasgow Boys were not an isolated, local phenomenon but part of what can now be seen as a much wider tradition. Since this book's first publication in 1988, their reputation has been restored, firmly locating them at the forefront of art's first international movement. 'A scholarly, comprehensive and splendidly illustrated study'. The Times 'For serious lovers or collectors of late-nineteenth-century British art, The Glasgow Boys must be seen as a vital addition to the bookshelf.' Spectator 'A beautiful production with an easy narrative style... Roger Billcliffe's credentials are distinguished and so is this book.' Arts Review 'Strongly recommended.' Sunday Telegraph

( At the end of the 19th century, a group of young Glasgo...)
At the end of the 19th century, a group of young Glasgow-based painters established an international reputation for realism and plein-air landscape painting. Led by James Guthrie, John Lavery, Arthur Melville, George Henry, and E. A. Hornel, the Glasgow Boys, as they came to be known, shared an enthusiasm for strong, fresh colors, naturalistic subject matter, and a willingness to travel outside Scotland for subjects and settings. Their enthusiasm for naturalism was equaled only by their dislike of the Scottish arts establishment. In this widely acclaimed book, Roger Billcliffe describes not only the work of the individual artists but also their rejection by local collectors and officialdom before European success caused their work to become much in demand. First published 20 years ago, the book rekindled interest in the group and their work. Now redesigned with more than 200 illustrations in color, it introduces the collective to a new generation of readers and collectors.
