HENRY ATKINSON, son of a prominent southern landholder, followed both family tradition and personal inclination when he accepted a commission and began a lifetime army career. Rising to the rank of colonel in 1814 and brigadier general in 1820, he spent nearly twenty-five years directing the work of his various commands in the trans Mississippi West-and the army had work to do in those days. The period between American independence and the Mexican War was one of nearly continuous geographical expansion. Military units provided settlers with protection from Indians, built and maintained "military roads" and forts, and explored and surveyed many parts of the ~Vest. General Atkinson's military reputation and the personal support of Secretary of War John C. Calhoun brought him the command of the Missouri Expedition of 1819. This caused his move west to St. Louis and resulted in his permanent duty on the frontier. In 182 5 he led the Yellowstone Expedition to sign treaties of peace with the Indian tribes along the Missouri River. In 1826 he chose the site for Jefferson Barracks, the first army infantry school, and the following year he directed construction of the post. In 1827 he successfully prevented a war with the Winnebago Indians in Wisconsin, and in 1832 he led American forces in the Black Hawk War. Five years later, in 1837, he secured the removal of the Potawatomi Indians from Missouri, and in 1840 he moved the Winnebagoes from Wisconsin into Iowa. Atkinson's career, far ranging and charged with Middle Western and Western interest, typifies the highest traditions of the army in its early period. It is part of the history of a restless, westward moving people who were never satisfied until the last mountain and plain were crossed-but who needed the army to help them do it.
