Rosamund Pike is a British actress. Pike is known for her portrayal of Jane Bennet in Pride & Prejudice (2005), and her performance in the psychological thriller Gone Girl, which was met with widespread critical acclaim, winning the Saturn Award for Best Actress.
Background
Rosamund Mary Ellen Pike was born on January 27, 1979, in Hammersmith, London, the United Kingdom. She was the only child of opera singers Caroline Friend and Julian Pike. Their lifestyle prepared her for the gypsy existence of a professional actress as the family lived out of suitcases, traveling for their performing careers.
Rosamund Pike was encouraged to embrace the arts at an early age. Until the age of seven, young Rosamund spent much of her childhood accompanying her parents all over Europe, where their professional commitments took them. During this time, seeing her parents rehearse and perform on stage, she became enamored with acting and wanted to take it up as a career.
Education
Rosamund Pike enrolled at the Badminton School in Bristol at the age of 11, having won a scholarship. She learned to play the piano and the cello and took up acting in real earnest at the age of 16 after joining The National Youth Theatre.
Her performance on stage as Juliet in a production of Romeo and Juliet when she was 18 caught the eye of a theatrical agent, who assisted her to commence her professional acting career.
Disappointingly, she was refused by all the drama schools she applied to, leaving her with no alternative but to seek admission to Oxford University's Wadham College to study English literature. She applied to multiple acting schools in university but was rejected by all of them.
She graduated with an Upper Second-class honors degree in 2001, having taken a year off to pursue her acting career, gaining stage experience in David Hare's Skylight, Arthur Miller's All My Sons, and several plays by Shakespeare.
While she was still at Oxford, Pike acted in and directed various plays, including one by Simon Chesterman, who was then a graduate student. In 1998, she appeared in A Rather English Marriage, a British television movie, and the next year, in a mini-series Wives and Daughters. She also acted in the pilot of Seven Days, a science fiction series, and in an episode of Foyle’s War, a British detective-drama television series. In 2001 she acted in a British television serial drama Love in a Cold Climate based on novels by Nancy Mitford.
After graduating, she found a lack of acting opportunities. Just when she was considering working at Waterstones bookshop she got another more tempting offer. Her big-screen debut came in 2002 when she was cast as Bond girl Miranda Frost in Die Another Day, despite never having watched any of the films in the spy series. Rosamund admitted feeling intimidated by working with veteran actors Pierce Brosnan, Halle Berry and Judi Dench in the movie. Rosamund was cast as the upper crust Bond Girl, whose weapon of choice is a fencing sword, in Die Another Day, which made $400 million globally. The role landed her international attention and earned her the 2003 Empire Award for Best Newcomer. She also appeared in the special show Bond Girls Are Forever and, shortly afterwards, the BAFTA tribute to the James Bond series.
In 2003, following the huge release of Die Another Day that brought her international fame, she again took to the stage to act in a play, Hitchcock Blonde. Her performance was acclaimed but somewhat controversial as in one scene; she appeared in nothing else but high-heeled shoes.
In 2004, she played an important role in The Libertine that starred Johnny Depp. For her performance in the film, she received critical acclaim and the award for the Best Supporting Actress at the British Independent Film Awards. In the same year, she appeared in two more films, The Promised Land, and the cinematic adaptation of the computer game series Doom.
In 2005, she played the part of Jane alongside Keira Knightley who played the character of Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice. In 2007, she acted alongside Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling in Fracture. In the same year, she also acted in the movie Fugitive Pieces, an adaptation of the book of the same name by Anne Michaels that was the inaugural film at the Toronto Film Festival.
After her brief stint in Hollywood, she returned with some truly exceptional performances in smaller films like An Education (2009), Made in Dagenham (2010), and in Barney's Version (2010) opposite Paul Giamatti.
Rosamund’s association with James Bond continued with her narrating The Spy Who Loved Me for a new series of James Bond audiobooks.
In 2010, she also lent her voice to the character of Pussy Galore in an adaptation of Goldfinger by BBC Radio 4. In 2011, she acted in Johnny English Reborn, a James Bond spoof, which proved to be a major commercial success.
In 2012, she appeared in the fantasy epic Wrath of the Titans. In the same year, she played the lead role opposite Tom Cruise in the movie Jack Reacher. The film was a critical and commercial success. Her performance in a supporting role in her next film The World’s End (2013) too received critical acclaim.
Her career reached new heights when she appeared opposite Ben Affleck in the 2014 thriller Gone Girl based on the novel of the same name by Gillian Flynn. Her performance as a woman who goes missing on her fifth wedding anniversary earned accolades from the critics and SAG, BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Academy Award nominations. The film also became a major box office hit.
In 2014, she had three other releases, A Long Way Down, Hector and the Search for Happiness, and What We Did on Our Holiday.
Since 2015, she has been the voice of Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward in the British animated science fiction television show Thunderbirds Are Go, a remake of the 1960s television series Thunderbirds. She starred in Voodoo in My Blood, a music video by Massive Attack in February 2016 that was inspired by the subway scene in the 1981 movie Possession.
Her recent films include Return to Sender (2015), a psychological thriller; A United Kingdom (2016), a British biographical romantic drama film; The Man with the Iron Heart (2017), biographical war drama-thriller; and Hostiles (2017), an American Western.
2018 was a busy year for Pike; two films have been released, Seven Days in Entebbe based on the 1976 dramatic rescue mission of the Air France flight and Beirut, an espionage thriller film set in the 1982 Lebanese Civil War. Her next films included A Private War, a biographical drama in which, Rosamund plays the character of journalist Marie Colvin.
Pike's upcoming films include the thriller The Informer and Radioactive, in which she will play Marie Curie. She has been cast in a leading role in Sony Pictures/Amazon Prime’s upcoming series The Wheel of Time, based on the fantasy series by Robert Jordan.
In 2019, she was cast in the lead role of Moiraine in Amazon Video's adaptation of Robert Jordan's fantasy epic The Wheel of Time.

Politics
In 2015, Pike signed an open letter for which the ONE Campaign had been collecting signatures; the letter was addressed to Angela Merkel and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, urging them to focus on women as they would serve as the head of the Group of Seven (G7) and the African Union (AU), respectively, which would start to set the priorities in development funding before the main United Nations (UN) summit in September 2015, supposed to establish new development goals for the generation.
Views
Rosamund Pike has supported numerous charities, including Barnardo's, Hear The World, Motion Picture and Television Fund Foundation, Nordoff Robbins, ONE Campaign, Oxfam, Screen Actors Guild Foundation, The Justice and Equality Fund, and Women for Women International.
Quotations:
"I think it's OK to play to your strengths, and if I have a quality of Englishness that people like, I won't hide that. I'm probably not going to play a junkie and that's OK because there are other people who will do it better. A view that's been held for a long time is that the best way to prove oneself as an actor is to play the grittiest roles out there. I don't agree with that."
"I'd love to say I was the kind of person who has an outline. But the only outline I have is that I want to carry on doing this all my life."
Personality
Pike makes an impression every time she goes on the red carpet. She loves the fashion world but does not enjoy the dress-up-for-the-cameras part. "I am not a clothes horse by profession," says Pike. "I will welcome the day with open arms when I can just turn up in jeans and a T-shirt and not give a (flip). That day hasn't come yet."
She has been known to take her corn snake Oswald to dinner and wear him as a bracelet. "People will say, 'I like your bracelet' and I say, 'Thanks, that's Oswald.' "
Director David Fincher flew Pike to St Louis to drink whiskey with him to see if she had the guts to play the part in Gone Girl (2014).
In August 2018, Pike, in an interview with the UK’s The Independent, revealed that she was asked to strip to her underwear during an audition for the 2002 James Bond film Die Another Day. Though she declined to strip, she got her part as a double-crossing spy Miranda Frost in the film.

Since December 2009, Pike has been in a relationship with Robie Uniacke, a businessman, and mathematical researcher, and they have two sons.
